Före Grödingebanans tillkomst på 1990-talet fungerade Södertälje hamn som stadens huvudsakliga järnvägsstation för både nationella och regionala tåg. Stationen används idag primärt för Stockholms pendeltågstrafik och ligger strategiskt placerad nära Södertälje hamn och Scanias huvudkontor.

Historik och namnbyte

Stationen var tidigare känd som Södertälje södra fram till 1994, då den bytte namn till Södertälje hamn.

Den tredje linjen, J48, förbinder Södertälje centrum med Gnesta.

Samtliga pendeltåg som går mellan Stockholm och Södertälje centrum måste byta körriktning vid Södertälje hamn station. Detta är nödvändigt eftersom tågen är 214 meter långa, och det skulle ta för lång tid för en ensam förare att förflytta sig mellan förarplatserna i tågets ändar.
