Light magic represents hope, truth, and divine intervention.

After all, there must be something very special about the hero if a god chose them over everyone else.

Great deeds can be another way to give a hero magic. How can you make a creature based magic system that is different from others? These elements might be air, earth, fire, and water – but they might also include life, death, time, space, and countless other options.

Yes, education can take years and be expensive. Maybe the bloodline is extremely common and actually dangerous to your society. Should they be wary of curses that could put them into an enchanted sleep or compel them to dance until they drop dead?

If so, you may be looking for fae magic. It’s popular in urban fantasy settings because it allows the rest of the world to remain just like the one we know.

Does your story take place in the real world? And maybe prepare better than I did before your players open that ancient spellbook.

Pick one of these magic types or combine a couple together.

Esoteric

Do you want crumbling books, forgotten runes, or rare spell ingredients? Magic that changes can keep your character and reader guessing while also giving you some really cool payoffs later in the story. 

11. Energy-Based Magic 

This type of magic system changes based on your character’s energy levels.

A bigger world event that explains this loss is called for. Add your own cultural flavor. Think about Avatar the Last Airbender combined with a fantastical DnD campaign. The only thing I don’t recommend is choosing two different options and keeping them entirely separate in your world. Invented languages create unique flavor (“Tha’nazir’s Binding”).
